🏠 Meadway Tips #1
Winter is knocking on the door and the autumn leaves are falling from the trees.
While your thoughts may be turning towards Christmas, don’t forget about your roof! Put your coat on and step outside for five minutes to do a quick visual check from the ground — your roof plays a vital role in keeping you dry and warm through the winter months.
A small pair of binoculars can be a handy tool for your inspection.
🔍 Things to Look Out For
🌳 Overhanging Trees - Branches can dislodge or break roof tiles and slates during windy conditions.
🌿 Climbing Plants - Cut back any ivy or other climbing plants from the eaves — they can grow under roof tiles and damage the roofing felt. They also create a convenient roadway for rodents to access your roof space, and once inside, they can cause significant damage.
🧱 Broken, Slipped, or Missing Tiles/Slates - Check carefully for any obvious movement or gaps.
💧 Gutters & Rainwater Goods - Make sure all gutters are clear and unblocked. Free-flowing guttering is essential — blocked gutters contribute to damp and cold inside your property. Also check:
Gutter joints for drips
Fascia brackets are secure
Gutter falls are correct
⚒️ Roof Cement - Inspect cement under ridge tiles — make sure it’s secure and not cracking, especially on the gables.
🔩 Lead Flashings - Check that all leadwork is secure and free from splits.
🪟 Flat Roofs - Ensure they’re clear of debris so water can drain freely. Look for any signs of cracking or lifting of the waterproof layer.
